We’re all well aware that traditional cigarettes are bad for our health, but did you know that they’re bad for your job prospects, too?
If you’re a smoker who’s looking for a job, as well as brushing up on your interview skills and updating your resume, you should consider quitting smoking. In this article, we’ll tell you why.
Read on to find out all about the negative impact cigarettes have on your ability to get a job and keep one.
Why Traditional Cigarettes are Bad for Your Job Prospects
It’s More Difficult to Find a Job
In a study by the Stanford University School of Medicine, nonsmokers were found to be 12-48% more likely to find employment than people who smoke.
You might argue that smoking could be both a cause and an effect of having trouble finding work.
People who smoke may face disadvantages during the interview process if their nicotine addiction stops them from focusing on the questions they’re being asked, which could come off poorly. Besides, smelling of cigarettes isn’t the best way to make a good first impression with a prospective employer. On the other hand, the stress of being unemployed may make smoking seem more appealing.
While this could be a chicken or egg scenario, the end result is the same. Smokers have a harder time finding jobs.
You Could Get Paid Less
As well as having trouble finding work, people who smoke tend to be worse off even when they do find employment.
Stanford’s study found that smokers earned, on average, $5 less per hour than nonsmokers. If that’s not a reason to lay off the cigarettes, we don’t know what is.
Lay off the cigarettes and you may increase your earning power.
Your Expenses Will Be Higher
Smoking is an expensive habit and that it will significantly increase your monthly expenditure, leaving you worse-off than nonsmokers.
It may also affect the way you prioritize your spending. The smokers in the study were found to have prioritized buying cigarettes over spending money on transport, grooming, and new clothes; factors that would improve their chances of finding work.
If you’re finding it hard to kick the habit completely, there is a better option. Vaping is 40% cheaper than traditional cigarettes. Choosing this option could save you a lot of money, and it comes without many of the harmful effects of cigarettes, too.
Even when you buy the best fruit e juice to vape with, you’ll still be spending much less than you would on cigarettes. Replacing smoking with vaping will not only improve your job prospects but your financial situation, too.
