3 Tips for Creating the Perfect Work Life Balance

life balanceAmericans work longer than anyone else in the industrialized world.

When we let work take over our lives, we face burnout, depression, and poor productivity. This is why it’s so important to create a good work life balance.

Read on to learn how you can create a better life, and have more time for the things you enjoy.

Creating the Perfect Work Life Balance

Here are 3 ways you can create the perfect work life balance:

1. Unplug

One of the reasons why so many people are feeling like they’re always working is because they’re always available. They’re continually checking in with their employees, reading work emails, and adjusting their work calendars.

In fact, 80% of people spend time answering phone calls and checking emails after hours. And that’s not counting the amount of time we all spend on social media.

One of the best ways you can create a better work life balance is to unplug as much as you can. This is particularly important if you’re a tech entrepreneur.

Turn your phone off for a few hours when you walk in the door, talk to your family, take a shower, make dinner, and relax away from any screens.

Create an organizational culture focused on leaving work at work. This will mean that you’ll actually be destressing and relaxing, instead of continuing to work after hours.

2. Prioritize Self-Care

You know you should be exercising and meditating. But if you’re like most people, you just never seem to fit it in. While you may be focused on your career plan, it’s important to look after yourself to avoid burnout.

If you want to create a balanced life, you need to plan this into your week. That means that every Sunday or Monday, when you’re planning your work week, you need to add in time for self-care.

Maybe you add an hour and a half to get to the gym and have a solid workout three times a week. Maybe you decide to give meditation a try for ten minutes every morning. Whatever it is, you have to actively block that time out to ensure it will happen.

3. Check Your Habits

Some habits and activities can be deceiving. They may seem to make you happy, but actually only make you more stressed out in the long-term.

For example, walking in the front door after work and lying on the couch watching TV for a few hours may sound great. It may even be the highlight of your day. But it’s unlikely to be helping you de-stress. It’s likely that before you know it, it’s time to go to bed and you’ll repeat the cycle tomorrow.

Fix It

The perfect work life balance is about doing activities that give you a deep sense of satisfaction. These are also activities that help move you forward in life, they’re beneficial, and they make you feel productive and energized.

Make a list of all the things that help you feel more balanced. Maybe this includes prepping your meals for the week, so you can just grab and go.

Maybe you know you need a hot bath and a good book a few times a week to really relax. Or maybe you need to schedule in regular chats with your best friend every week.
