Whether it is the beginning of the school year, two weeks before Christmas break, or three days before school lets out for the summer, teachers everywhere are in need of classroom supplies.
The following is a list of the six most requested, most used, and most consumed school products.
The Most Needed School Products
1. #2 Pencils
Good old yellow #2 pencils take the first spot in about any school products list.
The pencil is the essential writing tool for all grades. It is the one thing that every classroom needs but never has enough of. Students use and abuse pencils an alarming rate. And, they always misplace them at opportune times.
Many teachers swear by the Ticonderoga No. 2 brand as the best pencil. They last the longest and hold their own in the sharpener. Also, beware of the cheap dollar-store pencils. Parents will have to replenish those by mid-semester.
2. Pencil Sharpeners
Wherever there are pencils, there must always be pencil sharpeners. Every classroom should have at least one sharpener.
Electric Pencil Sharpeners
Electric sharpeners vary in price, though price does not always mean the best quality. They are convenient, though they often overheat due to heavy use.
Still, many teachers need them, if only for one placed on his or her desk for personal use.
Manual Pencil Sharpeners
A solid, old-fashioned crank pencil sharpener has stood the test of time. These are heavy duty and need only student elbow grease to work.
A manual sharpener may be the only sharpener or the emergency backup. Either way, they are essential classroom equipment.
Bostitch makes a solid manual pencil sharpener that reviews say holds up to heavy use.
3. Cap Erasers
Even if you manage to stock your classroom with enough pencils for three times your attendance roster, those pencils will lose their eraser tips before the pencil has lost a full inch. Those tiny eraser tips are rubbed, chewed, or skewered by safety scissors in record time.
Cap erasers save the now-naked pencils from an early death. Most teachers will specify plain pink cap erasures for purely diplomatic reasons.
Multicolored, scented, or glittery cap erasures have apparently started popularity wars in the past. Plain pink avoids the conflict.
4. Fiskars Student Scissors
Scissors are essential, no question. Though not all are equal. Ask any teacher, and he or she will insist on Fiskars brand scissors.
Student scissors come in ability levels from toddler on up. Fiskars has scissors for all ages, from preschool through high school.
Some teachers keep classroom sets of crayons. Others have students keep their own boxes at their desks. Either way, crayons are indispensable classroom products. The preferred brand is Crayola. Other brands are waxier and don’t transfer well to the paper.
The purpose of this article is not to promote brand names. However, markets strategists like SmashBrand say that recommendation is a reliable form of advertising.
6. Dry-erase Markers
Long gone are the days of chalkboards and clapping erasers after school. Every teacher needs a full arsenal of dry-erase markers in the classroom.
Both chunky and thin-sized markers are available. The thinner ones are great for students’ little hands when they write on the board.
Never-ending Need For School Products
If you are a teacher, you already know that there are never enough of these classroom supplies. If you are a parent, consider sending replenishment items midyear.
Chances are they are running low on pencils, erasers, and crayons.
